Maksed man

I really loved this piece, Man with Mask, by Wolfgang Mattheuer. He was a founding member of the Leipzig School style of painting. Although the main body of his work was created behind the iron curtain of the GDR, he somehow managed to outsmart the censors.

I think it's important to see this sculpture from both sides. It was one of my favorite pieces during my recent visit.

Entranced

I don't know this person, but I love how she seems to be entranced by this work. Unfortunately, I forgot to note the title and artist of the piece. It's part of the permanent collection of the museum which is now allegedly in storage until the museum reopens in a few years.

Monochrome trees

I hope you're not tired of the trees yet! They were just so interesting to photograph, I couldn't resist.

These two shots also appealed to me in black and white. Enjoy! And we'll be off to some other parts of the museum tomorrow.

Signs of nature

There were also a few window carvings strategically placed around the Sticks and Stones exhibit at the Neuenationalgallerie. Being a bird lover, I especially liked this one. There was also a window covered in Hebrew writing, but unfortunately that photo did not turn out well (too much light from outside). I know this isn't exactly a sign, but I hope you'll indulge me. Sticks and stones

Thanks to yesterday's comment from Sara Miller, I found a little more information on this exhibit. It is entitled Sticks and Stones and is indeed from architect/artist David Chipperfield. It's certainly no coincidence that Mr. Chipperfield is also the architect responsible for the upcoming renovation to the building. If you'd like to read more about the exhibit, take a look here.

A forest

There was a beautiful forest on the top floor exhibition space. Unfortunately, I didn't see any information about the artist and I think it was slowly being removed due to the upcoming renovation. I'm glad I saw it though and there's more tomorrow.

Saint Matthäus reflected

Before we go inside the museum, I thought it was worth it to show another look from the outside. The building was designed by the famous architect Mies van der Rohe, I think this is one of his best works (he also did the TD Building in Toronto). I just love the windows and the reflections. If you can't get enough of reflections, head over to Weekend Reflections for more.

New national gallery

Many big renovation projects are underway here in Berlin, including an expansion to the Neue Nationalgalerie. Since it will be closed for a few years, I made a last visit in December so I will be able to compare the before and after when all the work is done. I'll show a bit more from inside in the coming days.

Hip hip hooray!

I have an Internet connection in my new home! It will probably still be awhile until I get back to regular blogging though. There's still a lot of work to be done on the new place. It's good to be online though.

Last one

I vowed that yesterday would be my last holiday post, but I found one more from the Christmas market that I just had to share. I didn't like the way the buck is creepily staring, but the wooden hut, the lights and the welcoming sign all come together to make a nice ambiance here at Gendarmenmarkt. Two kings

The third king must be in another window! Happy Three Kings Day or Epiphany (whatever you like to call it). Only fourteen more days until I have Internet at home.

Berlin breakfast

Breakfast is very important to Germans. This was my first meal in 2015 - breakfast at Schwarzes Cafe. It's a Berlin institution and one of the first places around here that started serving breakfast round the clock. But don't expect to find North American fare here, there are no pancakes and bacon on the menu. It's breakfast, fancified!

Star of wonder

The holiday season is almost over. It's always a little sad to take the tree down, but it has to be done! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and I wish you lots of love and joy in the new year.

Sorry I've been absent lately, but I won't have a reliable Internet connection until 20 January. I am hoping to make at least a few sporadic posts in between. Maybe even a few shots of the new apartment.

Happy New Year!

My husband and I spent our first night in the apartment last night! I think it was a good way to ring in the New Year. We walked the streets around our new home and stopped to look at some of the many fireworks displays going on. These are not professional displays - these are just from regular people. I think we saw more fireworks here than we did last year at the Brandenburg Gate.
